Google to set up Asia HQ in Singapore

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – April 1, 2006 – Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) has set its sights on conquering Asia. In the latest development, it appears that the two founders of Google and its CEO Eric Schmidt have targetted Singapore as its base for the Asia-Pacific region. An insider spoke on condition of anonymity, “Larry and Sergy have long had Singapore in their sights. Its just that its not on the top of our “Top 100″ list then. However things have changed now and we seemed to preparing for what would be another milestone in our history”
Over in Singapore, the government is eagerly anticipating scoring another coup. “Our position in the world economy has received another recognition with the news from Google. Its definitely a decision that has had much thought into it. Given our geographical location as well as our world-class infrastructure, we have positioned ourselves to be in the forefront of magor corporations strategic positioning decisions”
All eyes are now set on Monday 9AM, when the stock market opens for the week. It is widely expected to have a ripple effect on the market sentiment and this will bode well for the coming weeks as the STI aims to break its previous record high.

The Things I Love About You… Youtube that is!

I have taken to Youtube recently. It seemed inevitable that i would be smitten by such and i am guilty as charged. I received a link from my chums telling me to check out this American Idol audition that showcased the young and lovely “Paris Bennett”. Ok, i admit, the friend sent out the email like this: “Hey, check out Paris. Real good stuff. You know you’ll want more.” Now before dirty thoughts start creeping in, i have always been interested in Paris, the city, not Paris Hilton. Yeah right!

Anyway, back to the post, after watching the video clip, i decided to just look around and lo and behold, i found plenty of interesting videos that made me forget the time and i just clicked and clicked til my mouse button came unhinged. Unhinged? Yeap, apparently my mouse has hinges.
So there i was happily surfing away looking at parodies of Sopranos, V for Vendetta trailers and even a how to build your linux box video. I would say that i came out of it wiser for the experience, but now i have a problem. I’m addicted to it!

Oh, btw, i did not see any Paris Hilton clips much to my chargrin!

Microsoft Delays

Microsoft Corp. will delay the consumer release of its new Windows operating system until January 2007, missing the holiday sales season and throwing some PC makers and retailers into turmoil.

The delay in Windows Vista – caused by Microsoft needing more time to enhance security and other functions – will come as a blow to Microsoft partners who were looking forward to a new operating system to boost holiday sales.

“It’s a much bigger deal for the computer makers than it is for anybody else,” said David Smith, a vice president with Gartner Inc.

Windows Vista is Microsoft’s first major update to the company’s flagship operating system since Windows XP was released in late 2001, meaning partners will be left with a fifth major holiday season without a new version of the operating system to promote.

“It’s not the optimal situation, to be launching the next-generation version of Windows right after the big holiday sales season,” said analyst Joe Wilcox with Jupiter Research.

Spokesman for Dell Inc. declined to comment on how the delay might affect sales. In a statement released by Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard Co. said it supported Microsoft’s decision to make quality a priority in scheduling the operating system’s release.

Microsoft will release some versions of the new operating system for big businesses in November as planned, but the consumer version will be postponed until January, said Jim Allchin, co-president of the Microsoft division that includes Windows.

Wilcox said releasing the system in November to businesses would likely help Microsoft – since its business sales are highly profitable – while the delay in the consumer release would be most harmful to its partners.

“You can play semantics and say that the operating system is shipping in 2006, but if consumers can’t buy it until 2007, PC manufacturers don’t have it to sell to them,” Wilcox said. “This blow falls on the partners.”

The news sent Microsoft shares down 2.5 percent in late-session trading, to $27.05. Earlier the stock fell 15 cents to close at $27.74 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Allchin said the decision to delay the Vista release came after Microsoft realized that Vista would be completed several weeks later than originally planned, largely because of efforts to improve security in the new system. Microsoft’s Windows operating system has been an immensely popular target of Internet attackers, leading to a major companywide initiative to improve security in all its products.

That delay was enough for some retailers, computer makers and other corporate partners to say they would have trouble preparing for the holiday season. Allchin said troubling factors included the time it takes to move computers from overseas manufacturers onto store shelves.

“The fact is that we wanted everybody in the industry to be ready for this,” Allchin told journalists and analysts in a conference call.

In an interview, Allchin said he suspects some computer makers may give consumers who buy a new PC during the holidays a way to easily upgrade once Vista becomes available. But he said he couldn’t predict how the delay might affect holiday season computer sales.

Analyst Matt Rosoff with independent research firm Directions on Microsoft said he suspects computer makers are likely displeased with the situation, but with Microsoft’s stranglehold on the operating system market they have little control over it.

“Certainly PC makers aren’t going to be happy about it, but I don’t know exactly what they’re going to do. They’ll wait,” he said. “There’s not a whole lot of choice at this point.”

All that jazz about security issues come as an irony to me as Windows have not exactly rolled out a bug free copy from the very first instance. Capturing the market first, before reeling them in with software patches seem to be their preferred business model of choice. Why the turnaround now? Will they even pull it off? One suspects that they will though

Bottle Cap Tripods

The rage these days it seems comes from a bottle cap and a piece of threaded dowel.

Branded a bottle cap tripod, it has emerged from the searches in all over the world to rise to the top search phrase for this week. That is no mean feat when you consider that it has to contend itself with the other hot phrases of the moment like “Bush does”, “Pavlina”, “in Euroweb”.

How do i know all this? All thanks to my Gmail and myspace@msn. I have been getting scores of emails from people telling me of what i have been missing out and urging me to go click on that flashing link to take a look. A Peek-a-boo of sorts.

Thats right, we definitely need to look more at spam and how to best counter them. Granted that spam will always think of new ways to attack our mail boxes, we still must perhaps develop thinking spam busters which would help to filter as much of unnecessary emails from even hitting our inbox. This is one situation when we definitely have to be constantly on the defensive since spam tends to find new innovative ways to entice us to click. Or maybe we can devise one spam buster where we can state something like: Bush out, pavlina in. Oh, we have that, its called a spam filter. :p

No cents from Adsense

After consecutive days of Adsense earnings that was bringing the bacon (fat free bacon at $1+ only), i had a shock when i saw that my earnings for 90 clicks was a measly $0.10.

Now if my mathematics have not deserted me, that works out to be about a tenth of a cent for every click. Great going dude, at this rate, the Cassini-Huygens would have flown back from Saturn and another spacecraft sent out to Pluto before i perhaps hit my $10K mark.

Being a noob, i am clueless as to what has happened actually.
But i don’t intend to stay clueless for long. Now, i have always had this knack of getting the information i desired. All i have to do in this case is just to put my rusted brains to use once more and attempt to understand better the Adsense patent and stuff. I would recommend Eric Giguere’s site for Adsense beginners, since its what i’m going to read.

If its good enough for me, it should be good enough for anybody, considering i have the attention span of a three-year old. Ok Ok, i confess, i have the attention of a two year old. You happy now?

, i’ll be back. Stronger and more worthy of your consideration. Mark my words. After all, if i have the whole of Digital Point to help me, i cannot go wrong, unless i screw myself up.

Fans of Pixar Animations would be delighted to hear of the fast paced comedy adventure that is set to hit the silver screen soon.
A fine story about life and its journeys, rather than the destination, it showcases the typical talent of Walt Disney to incorporate life’s lessons into their productions. Owen Wilson and Paul Newman are among the many to lend their voices in this production.

Enjoy the preview in the meantime!

What is the price of a photograph?
To what extremes would you go to earn, get this, 50 whopping ringgit?

Apparently, one of our neighbours up north decided that it was a big deal and proceeded to take a pic which first appeared on ‘celebrity blog’, By removing the water marks and all, Ms Vivien “i will plunder from Kennysia to win RM50″ Chew won herself the cash prize from The Star

Maybe the editors felt that the piece of watermark removal job is quite well done and proceeded to acknowledge her “talent”. After all, in a society bereft of creativity and teeming with intellectual property thieves, what better way to put yourself in the shop window than this? Plus, RM50 would probably buy you lots of wanton noodles there. ( Uncle, i want ketchup hor? )

Well, Kenny, you should just go and badger the Editor of The Star for your moolah when you are over in KL for the KL Marathon
